Credit cards are no longer just a payment tool they have become a major factor influencing consumer buying decisions. Whether purchasing a smartphone, booking flight tickets, or securing tickets for a movie or concert, customers now compare cashback offers, reward points, discounts, and early access benefits before making a purchase. The focus has shifted from price alone to the value offered by a particular credit card.
The rapid growth of digital payments, especially with RuPay credit cards linked to UPI, has expanded credit card usage from large purchases to everyday spending such as grocery shopping, food delivery, and quick commerce services. Young professionals are driving this trend, with many applying for their first credit card soon after getting a job. Consumers are also using multiple cards for different purposes, such as travel, shopping, and rewards, encouraging banks to introduce more co branded cards and exclusive offers.
According to market estimates, India's credit card market is expected to grow from $20.1 billion in 2025 to $38.3 billion by 2034. However, financial experts warn that attractive cashback offers and easy credit can encourage unnecessary spending. Managing multiple cards may also increase repayment burdens, as credit card interest rates often exceed 30%, making responsible usage essential.
