Indian Pharma Faces Fresh US Tariff Concerns

US President Donald Trump has announced a new tariff policy for imported generic medicines into the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that a zero percent tariff would continue on all imported generic drugs for the first two years from August 1. After that period, a 100 percent tariff for one year and later a 200 percent tariff would come into effect. He said the move aims to encourage foreign companies to establish manufacturing facilities in the US and increase domestic production of generic medicines.

The proposed policy could impact Indian pharmaceutical companies, as India is one of the largest suppliers of affordable generic medicines to the US market. According to industry data, India exported pharmaceutical products worth around $9.7 billion to the US in 2025. Experts believe Indian companies may need to expand manufacturing in the US to avoid higher tariffs, while the final impact will depend on implementation rules and possible exemptions.
