A video shared by Bengaluru based young professional Simridhi Makhija has sparked a debate on personal finance and spending habits among young earners. She questioned whether income earned in the twenties should be used to build a secure future or to fund an expensive lifestyle. Her views have become a trending topic on social media, particularly among young professionals.
In her video, Makhija highlighted what she described as "lifestyle inflation". She pointed out that many youngsters spend around ₹5,000 on a café visit, pay ₹40,000 in monthly rent for status despite cheaper housing options, and spend nearly ₹20,000 on shopping or leisure trips. She advised that as income increases, expenses should not automatically rise. Instead, she encouraged young people to focus on saving more during the early years of their careers to prepare for an uncertain future.
The video received mixed reactions online. Many users agreed that uncontrolled lifestyle inflation can erode salary growth and weaken long-term financial security. Others argued that people in their twenties should focus on increasing their income while also enjoying life, saying there is nothing wrong with spending money responsibly while earning.
