Tata Sons Retained in RBI's List Again

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) yesterday retained Tata Sons in its latest list of Upper Layer Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). However, the central bank clarified that this inclusion will not affect Tata Sons' application seeking cancellation of its NBFC registration. RBI stated that the application is currently under examination but did not specify when a decision will be taken.

The updated list includes 17 NBFCs and Core Investment Companies (CICs) considered systemically important due to their large asset base and significance to the financial system. As of the end of March, Tata Sons had assets worth more than ₹2 lakh crore and continues to be registered as a Core Investment Company.

Tata Sons is the holding company of the Tata Group and the principal promoter of several listed companies, including TCS, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, and Titan. Since its inclusion in the RBI's Upper Layer NBFC list in 2022, the company has been subject to stricter governance, investment, and disclosure norms.
