Following Natarajan Chandrasekaran’s decision to step down as Tata Sons’ executive chairman after his current term ends in February 2027, attention has turned to his possible successor. TV Narendran, the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Steel, is reportedly among the leading names being discussed in corporate circles. Narendran joined the Tata Group in 1988 after completing engineering at NIT Tiruchirappalli and management studies at IIM Calcutta. He has since held several key roles and played an important part in expanding Tata Steel’s international business.
The next Tata Sons chairman will face several challenges, particularly in turning around businesses such as Air India, Tata Digital and Tata Electronics. Air India’s losses reportedly rose to around ₹22,238 crore in FY2025-26, while Tata Digital posted a loss of ₹4,974 crore despite higher revenue. Meanwhile, the process to select Chandrasekaran’s successor has already begun, with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust approving steps to form a selection committee and recommend a new chairman.
