Protests held in Mumbai in support of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar turned tense after participants reportedly staged protests without prior permission. Demonstrations were held at August Kranti Maidan and other parts of the city, prompting police to detain more than 400 protesters. Bollywood actor Imran Khan was also among those who participated in the demonstrations.
The protests were organised in solidarity with the CJP’s ongoing agitation in the national capital. On Friday morning, police detained around 200 people in the same area, including members of the ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’ organisation led by social activist Tushar Gandhi and CPI(M) workers. Meanwhile, activists of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), led by Prakash Ambedkar, staged a separate protest at Hutatma Chowk in South Mumbai. Police officials said the process of registering FIRs against those who held demonstrations without permission was underway.
