AI Boom, Job Security Bust?

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are expanding rapidly across the world, with companies investing heavily in AI-powered technologies, new products, automation and specialised engineering teams. However, the same sector is witnessing growing concerns over job security. According to a recent survey conducted by workplace community platform Blind, 66% of AI and ML professionals in India believe their teams could face headcount reductions within the next three to six months. The survey covered 1,552 professionals in July 2026. Layoff concerns were even higher in sales and marketing, at 68%, followed by AI and ML at 66% and product and design at 65%.

Engineers appear somewhat more confident, but concerns remain significant. Only 24% of engineers said layoffs were “very likely”, while 58% felt their jobs were vulnerable to some degree. In data and analytics, the figure stood at 51%. The trend highlights a paradox in the AI industry: while demand for AI skills is growing, companies are also using AI to automate tasks, improve productivity and operate with leaner teams. As a result, some roles are changing and certain teams are becoming smaller. For AI professionals, the message is clear—technical expertise alone may not be enough. Continuous learning, familiarity with emerging tools and technologies, and strong domain knowledge could become increasingly important for long-term career security.
