Social activist Anna Hazare has warned of an indefinite hunger strike if the Maharashtra government does not withdraw recent amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) rules. In his letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he said the Maharashtra RTI Rules 2026 weaken the spirit of the RTI Act 2005 and restrict public access to information.
He strongly opposed the unexplained increase in fees, stating that RTI is not a revenue-generating law. Hazare also suggested that penalties for officials who deny information should be increased if fees are raised. He demanded that all provisions undermining transparency be withdrawn immediately.
