AP Opposes Review of Krishna Water Allocations

Andhra Pradesh has firmly opposed any review of the water allocations made by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-I, also known as the Bachawat Tribunal, for dams and projects on the Krishna River. Appearing before the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal-II, senior advocate Jaideep Gupta argued that once a tribunal has issued its orders on water allocations, they cannot be altered without hearing all four basin states Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Gupta said the existing project wise allocations for the Krishna Delta System, KC Canal and Nagarjuna Sagar should continue and that saved water allocations should not be disturbed. He also rejected Telangana’s argument for allocating Krishna water solely on the basis of river basin areas, stating that long-term project requirements, drought prone regions and other factors are considered while determining allocations. Andhra Pradesh concluded its arguments before the tribunal on Thursday, with Telangana scheduled to begin its submissions from Friday.
