Bar Council Takes Key Decision on NALSAR Students’ Controversy

The controversy over NALSAR University inviting Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant as the chief guest for its 2026 convocation has taken a significant turn. The Bar Council of India (BCI) has temporarily suspended the advocate enrolment process for NALSAR’s 2026 law graduates, describing the students’ action as disciplinary misconduct and a potentially dangerous professional trend. State Bar Councils have been directed not to enrol NALSAR graduates as advocates until further orders.

The BCI has also issued a notice to the university’s Vice-Chancellor and ordered a detailed inquiry, with a report to be submitted within three days. The inquiry has been asked to examine alleged campus politics and the role of faculty members. The BCI said it would take a final decision on August 19 after examining the report. Earlier, students had written to the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar opposing Justice Surya Kant’s invitation, stating that they were unwilling to receive their degrees from him and raising concerns over his approach to constitutional values and civil rights.
