Body Cameras for TTEs.. Railways Takes Key Decision

Indian Railways is planning to equip Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) with body cameras to curb disputes, assaults and allegations of bribery during ticket checks. The railway authorities have already tested the cameras on a trial basis in select divisions and, following positive results, are preparing to begin the tender process for wider implementation. The cameras will record interactions between TTEs and passengers while they are on duty.

The lightweight cameras will be securely attached to the TTE’s coat or shirt using heavy-duty clips or magnetic holders. They are expected to offer 1080p video recording, wide-angle coverage and infrared night vision, with around 12 hours of recording capability. TTEs will not be able to delete or alter the recorded footage, which will have to be uploaded to railway servers after duty. Some models may also feature GPS tracking. The Railways plans to expand the system to staff on major express and superfast trains across the country by next year.
