The Tamil Nadu government has taken strict departmental action against five police personnel over allegations of demanding and collecting bribes in separate incidents in Tirunelveli and areas around Chennai. The cases reportedly involved demands ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, including alleged digital payments. Head Constable Sornaraj was suspended after an inquiry reportedly found that he demanded ₹1,000 from a two-wheeler rider during a vehicle check and allegedly asked the person to transfer the money through GPay after claiming that there was no need for cash.
In another case, SI Sivaraj and Constable Vivek were suspended over allegations that they collected ₹10,000 through GPay to hand over a stolen two-wheeler to its rightful owner. An SI who allegedly demanded a bribe was suspended following a vigilance inquiry. Meanwhile, SI Mareeswaran, who was found to have accepted a bribe while serving at Anna Nagar Police Station earlier, was dismissed from service. The action signals a strict approach towards corruption within the police department.
