The Supreme Court has directed the Chhattisgarh government to hand over the investigation into the death of a young man in police custody to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court strongly criticised the authorities for allegedly trying to conceal the custodial death and expressed displeasure over the Director General of Police (DGP) for allegedly presenting a fabricated version of events to cover up the incident.
The Supreme Court warned that strict action would be taken against all officials responsible for custodial violence. It also directed the state government to provide an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the deceased’s family. The court ordered the CBI to submit its investigation report by October 13.
