Union Minister for Information Technology and Electronics Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that a consultation paper on artificial intelligence (AI) regulation will be released within a month. The document will focus on key issues, including AI safety, deepfakes, a human-centric approach and skill development. Vaishnaw stressed that India needs appropriate policy guidelines to regulate the use of artificial intelligence.
Speaking at an event marking the release of the World Development Report, Vaishnaw said he would ask the concerned department to prepare a consultation paper centred on safety and regulatory measures. He described deepfakes as a serious threat capable of creating major problems in society and expressed concern over their rapidly improving quality. He emphasised the need to address the harmful effects of AI while ensuring its safe and responsible use.
