Mumbai Police have filed a 700-page chargesheet against 39-year-old Pune resident Faiyaz Premji, who is accused of attempting to poison people during a Muharram procession in Mumbai in June. According to the police, Premji allegedly procured more than 50 kg of zinc phosphide and prepared thousands of capsules, which he reportedly distributed during the procession while claiming they were painkillers or immunity boosters. Police had earlier recovered around 14,900 capsules from him.
The case came to light after a procession participant who allegedly consumed one of the capsules developed vomiting and stomach discomfort and was taken to hospital. Police said Premji was detained while distributing the capsules and later arrested. The chargesheet reportedly contains statements from more than 30 witnesses. Investigators have also been probing his alleged motive, including claims of longstanding grievances with members of his community. The seized capsules were sent for forensic examination, with the final report awaited.
