Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to address the potential impact of El Niño over the next eight months, stressing the need to involve the public in preventive measures. During a review meeting with senior officials at his residence on Saturday, the Chief Minister warned that the state could face serious electricity shortages, even though the government was willing to spend whatever was necessary to procure power. He urged officials to promote electricity conservation and consider temporarily postponing power-intensive activities wherever feasible. He also called for public awareness campaigns through films, media and cultural programmes after Dussehra, covering the possible effects of deficient rainfall on drinking water, irrigation, agriculture and power supply.
The Chief Minister said the state government had requested a special financial package of ₹20,000 crore from the Centre and sought drought relief for 215 mandals facing rainfall deficits. He directed officials to ensure adequate water for standing crops, prevent wastage and explore additional employment opportunities under the rural employment guarantee programme. He also called for a dedicated war room and toll-free helpline to monitor the situation, while asking senior officials to closely track electricity supply. Revanth Reddy is scheduled to hold a special meeting with ministers on October 12, followed by a video conference with farmers at 1 p.m. The government has asked farmers to participate from their respective Rythu Vedikas. Separately, the Chief Minister invited Congress legislators, MPs, MLCs and party leaders from Telangana to attend party programmes in Delhi on October 12.
