A new report by Datum Intelligence has revealed that deceptive interface designs known as “dark patterns” on online platforms are causing Indian consumers losses of around ₹25,000–28,000 crore annually. The study estimates that out of 30.4 crore online shoppers, nearly 88% are affected by hidden charges, forced add-ons, drip pricing, misleading urgency tactics, and subscription traps, leading to an average monthly loss of ₹78–₹87 per user.
The research covered 12 major platforms across e-commerce, quick commerce, and travel booking services, along with feedback from 2,590 users across 50 cities. It found that 63% of users faced hidden or additional charges, while 73% reported forced choice patterns. Amazon emerged as the most trusted platform, while Flipkart recorded higher distrust levels. MakeMyTrip was rated safer for travel bookings, whereas Cleartrip was seen as less reliable. Despite rising awareness, 85% of users said they feel misled by such practices.
