Indian Railways is considering introducing passenger cum cargo double decker trains that can transport travellers and goods in the same train. A Railway Board committee has suggested that these trains could be operated under the Vande Bharat series. The proposed design will have passengers travelling on the upper deck and cargo being carried in the lower section.
The move aims to revive the ‘belly freight’ concept that was proposed four years ago. The Railways is currently awaiting the Prime Minister’s Office’s opinion on the proposal. If approved, the new model could be introduced in future Vande Bharat trains to improve passenger services and freight transportation efficiency.
