Electric Air Taxis to Be Introduced in India by 2028: Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu

India aims to introduce electric air taxis by 2028, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said. Speaking at the inauguration of Sarla Aviation’s new headquarters in Bengaluru, the minister said electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft could provide a new mode of urban transportation in congested cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. He added that testing of the technology is expected to accelerate from next year.

The minister said eVTOL aircraft could significantly ease traffic congestion in major cities and potentially reduce journeys that currently take 90 minutes to two hours to just 20–30 minutes. Sarla Aviation has received Design Organisation Approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, paving the way for a full-scale testing phase next year, subject to regulatory and safety requirements. The government is working towards making electric air taxis a reality in India by 2028.
