Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay launched the expanded ‘Vetri Payanam’ scheme at the Koyambedu bus terminus in Chennai on Gandhi Jayanti. During the launch, Vijay travelled on a government bus, interacted with passengers and symbolically took on the role of a conductor by distributing tickets. The expanded scheme provides free travel for women and transgender persons on additional categories of government buses across the state.
Under the expanded ‘Vetri Payanam’ scheme, free travel has been extended to Express, Limited Stop and Deluxe services, along with ordinary mofussil buses and ordinary buses operating on hill routes exceeding 40 kilometres. A total of 12,692 government buses have been brought under the scheme, with the government estimating that around 84.32 lakh women will benefit every day.
