Navi Pillay is a distinguished South African jurist of Indian Tamil origin whose family history connects her to India. Born on September 23, 1941, in Durban, South Africa, she grew up in a family whose grandparents had been taken from India to South Africa as indentured labourers to work on sugar plantations. Despite the hardships associated with her family’s history, Pillay went on to build an influential career in law and international justice. She became known globally for her work in human rights and her contribution to strengthening international legal institutions.
Pillay served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Through these roles, she contributed to international efforts to address human rights violations and promote accountability for serious crimes. Her journey from Durban to prominent international judicial institutions reflects the global impact of her legal career and her family’s Indian Tamil heritage.
