Rising living costs, financial uncertainty and concerns about the future are prompting many members of Gen Z to look beyond their primary jobs for additional income. With relying solely on a monthly salary becoming increasingly challenging, young people are exploring freelancing, content creation, online work and small businesses as ways to supplement their earnings.
According to the Deloitte 2026 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, 54% of Gen Z respondents in India said financial concerns had led them to postpone major life decisions, while 20% reported difficulties in meeting their daily or monthly expenses. Buying a home, building savings and securing their financial future have emerged as major concerns, encouraging young workers to seek additional sources of income.
A side hustle refers to additional work taken up alongside a primary job. Deloitte’s 2026 survey found that nearly 30% of Gen Z respondents have part-time or full-time side jobs. Beyond earning extra money, more than one-third of Gen Z workers engaged in side hustles are also looking to develop new skills and build professional connections. For many, these opportunities provide a way to explore new fields while maintaining the stability of a primary job.
