Govt Approves Trial of Polymer Notes

The Central Government has approved the field trial and subsequent public circulation of ₹10 and ₹20 polymer currency notes. In a statement made in the Lok Sabha, the government clarified that the new polymer notes will not replace the existing paper currency but will circulate alongside it.

The Reserve Bank of India is currently studying the impact of polymer notes on the payment ecosystem. If the field trials are successful, around one billion ₹10 notes and one billion ₹20 notes are expected to be printed. Polymer notes are more durable than paper currency, offering better resistance to water, moisture, and wear and tear, while also providing enhanced security features to curb counterfeiting.
