GSI Gets Its First Woman Director General

After 175 years, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has appointed a woman to its top position. Varsha Ashok Aglawe has made history as the first woman Director General of the GSI, taking charge as the institution’s 54th DG.

With more than 30 years of experience in geoscience, Aglawe’s career includes palaeontology, fossil research and geological exploration. She will lead the country’s mineral exploration and natural hazard research efforts while playing an important role in strengthening India’s critical mineral security. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for women in Indian science.
