Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has reportedly stated that the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened until the United States changes its current approach. The council has issued new demands concerning the management of maritime traffic through the strategic waterway. It has also called for the lifting of the naval blockade and the withdrawal of US forces from the Persian Gulf.
The demands are significant as the Strait of Hormuz is a major route for international maritime traffic and energy shipments. Iran’s latest position indicates that it wants clarity on the withdrawal of US forces and the lifting of the naval blockade before considering the reopening of the strategic waterway.
