Travellers who rely on free Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and other public places need to be cautious, as cybercriminals can exploit insecure public networks and captive portals to target users. Microsoft has highlighted the security risks associated with public Wi-Fi, noting that attackers can potentially use fake hotspots, malicious redirects and deceptive login pages to steal personal or account information. Captive portals are commonly used by hotels and airports to authenticate users before granting internet access.

Cybercriminals may attempt to trick users into clicking unexpected prompts that appear to request browser updates, troubleshooting tools or security checks. Such prompts can potentially lead users to malicious downloads or fake login pages designed to capture credentials. Microsoft recommends taking extra care when using public Wi-Fi and, where possible, relying on personal cellular hotspots or encrypted private connections. Users should avoid entering sensitive information into unfamiliar pages and should not download software or updates prompted by suspicious Wi-Fi notifications.
