Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have seized a large consignment of Chinese firecrackers that was allegedly imported without the required permissions at Chennai Port. The firecrackers were concealed inside containers declared as stationery, medical gloves, hairbands, clips, wardrobes and shoe racks. Acting on suspicion, DRI officials inspected the containers and discovered large quantities of Chinese firecrackers hidden behind cartons.
The seized firecrackers are estimated to be worth more than ₹12 crore, according to officials. Preliminary findings indicate that the consignment was imported without the necessary approvals. DRI officials are now focusing on identifying the smuggling network behind the operation and examining how the consignments were allegedly brought in using misleading declarations. Further investigation is underway.
