The Mumbai Crime Branch has intensified its investigation into the death by suicide of IIT Bombay student Sahil Ravindra Wakode. Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who has been named in the case following allegations by Sahil’s family, was questioned for nearly 8–10 hours and his statement was recorded. Investigators are examining what happened during the crucial 12:30 pm to 12:45 pm period in the examination hall, when Sahil was allegedly found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination and was subsequently asked to leave the hall.
The probe is also examining the sequence of events before Sahil’s death, including the interaction between the student and the professor, examination procedures and allegations of harassment and caste-based discrimination raised by the family. Professor Doolla has denied the allegations and maintained that he followed institutional procedures. Police have so far recorded statements from several students and staff members and are examining CCTV footage, electronic evidence and other records. IIT Bombay has also constituted a 10-member committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
