Independence Day, Republic Day.. Do You Know the Real Difference?

India celebrates Independence Day on August 15 and Republic Day on January 26 every year. Independence Day marks the country’s freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947. On the occasion, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi and addresses the nation. Across the country, people hoist the Tricolour and remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters through patriotic celebrations.

Republic Day, observed on January 26, marks the day the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, and came into force on January 26, 1950. The grand Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi is the main attraction, featuring the armed forces, cultural tableaux and displays showcasing India’s rich heritage. Independence Day celebrates India’s freedom, while Republic Day marks the adoption and implementation of the Constitution that established India as a republic.
