External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said Russia has historically stood by India when its security and territorial integrity faced challenges. He said India’s relationship with Russia, built over several decades, has expanded beyond defence to include trade, energy, nuclear cooperation, space and investment. Jaishankar stressed that India’s assessment of Russia is shaped by its own historical experience and national interests. India’s long-standing defence and nuclear cooperation with Russia is also documented by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Speaking about the Russia-Ukraine war, Jaishankar said India is going beyond simply advocating dialogue and is engaging with both sides on specific issues. These discussions include Black Sea shipping, grain and energy exports, as well as possible arrangements to prevent attacks. The comments come amid continuing disruptions to Black Sea trade and energy flows linked to the conflict.
