The Government of India has announced a major infrastructure project worth ₹13,000 crore to develop a dual-use airport and runway in Great Nicobar Island. Designed to serve both civilian aircraft and the Indian Navy, the project is expected to significantly enhance India's strategic and security capabilities in the Indian Ocean region while improving connectivity to one of the country's most remote island territories.
Located near the strategically important Malacca Strait, one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes, the proposed airport is expected to strengthen India's presence in a key geopolitical zone. The project is also expected to support economic development, tourism, and logistics infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar region. According to official plans, the airport is likely to be completed within the next five years.
