Indira Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month and holds special significance as it falls during Pitru Paksha. In 2026, Indira Ekadashi is observed on October 6. According to Hindu religious beliefs, devotees observe a fast, worship Lord Vishnu and remember their ancestors on this day. Lighting lamps is also considered an auspicious spiritual practice. A lamp may be lit beneath a Peepal tree in the evening using sesame oil or pure ghee, as it is traditionally believed to bring peace to ancestors and help devotees in their spiritual efforts related to Pitru Rina.
Devotees may also light lamps at the main entrance of the house, in the kitchen, near a Tulsi plant and at a Vishnu temple. These practices are traditionally associated with positive energy, prosperity, family well-being and ancestral blessings. Lighting a lamp near a sacred river is also considered auspicious; those unable to visit a river may light one near a vessel filled with water at home. Offering lamps at a Vishnu temple while praying with devotion is also believed to be beneficial. These practices are based on religious and traditional beliefs and are not scientifically established.
