CSIR–National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), with support from the Naval Design (Submarine) Group, has developed JAYA, an indigenous Autonomous Underwater Vehicle designed for advanced underwater operations. The technology has now been transferred to Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) for serial production, marking a step towards scaling up India’s domestic underwater technology capabilities.
JAYA is designed to operate autonomously underwater and can be configured with different sensor systems depending on the mission. Its capabilities can support ocean research, underwater surveillance and maritime applications, including activities related to port and coastal security. The move from research and development to industrial-scale production is expected to strengthen India’s indigenous marine technology ecosystem.
