The GHMC has cancelled the ₹1,090-crore project to construct steel bridges and underpasses at seven junctions around KBR Park in the heart of Hyderabad. The works were planned in two packages. About a month ago, officials introduced a one-way traffic system on the routes to avoid congestion during construction. Although motorists faced difficulties initially, traffic movement became smoother from the third day, with reduced waiting time at signals. Considering that the traffic problem had been addressed through the one-way system, the government felt that spending hundreds of crores on the proposed works would be unnecessary.
The decision was approved by the Standing Committee at a meeting held at the GHMC headquarters on Saturday, chaired by Special Officer and Municipal Administration Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan. The committee cancelled the proposed works at Jubilee Check Post, KBR Park Gate, Mugdha Junction and near Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital, among other locations. It also approved the termination of contracts signed with KNR and Megha for the projects. Meanwhile, the Standing Committee approved a six-lane elevated corridor connecting the NFCL Junction at Panjagutta with the Jubilee Check Post Metro Station road. The proposed corridor will be around four kilometres long, with ramps planned towards Jalagam Vengal Rao Park for vehicles heading towards Banjara Hills Road No. 1. The final cost will be determined after the designs are completed, and GHMC has entrusted the elevated corridor project to Megha.
