Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has expressed confidence that India’s first indigenously manufactured civil aircraft could be available within the next two years. Speaking at an Indian Foundation for Quality Management conference on Tuesday, he said India’s domestic aviation sector is growing rapidly. Indian airlines have currently placed orders for more than 1,600 aircraft, with the total value estimated at around $100 billion.
Naidu said more than 100 new airports could be developed across the country over the next decade. India currently has 165 airports, while domestic airlines operate around 850 aircraft. He noted that India is among the fastest-growing domestic civil aviation markets in the world. The government is also examining the potential for manufacturing jet engines within the country, he added.
