A major twist has emerged in the theft of weapons from the Madras Regiment armoury in Bollaram, Secunderabad. According to the Malkajgiri police investigation, former Army havildar Upputolla Mallesha alias Raju allegedly planned to use the stolen weapons to carry out robberies at banks and jewellery stores. Police said Mallesha, who had a previous criminal history and was allegedly accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, was looking for ways to make quick money. Seven other people were also arrested for allegedly assisting him in the conspiracy.
The investigation revealed that three Army personnel known to Mallesha allegedly helped him steal the weapons from the armoury. On August 30, 12 firearms, 1,912 rounds of ammunition and three binoculars were reportedly stolen, with the theft being detected by officials the following day. Mallesha was arrested on September 11 and was subsequently questioned in police custody. Based on the information obtained during the investigation, police arrested the three Army personnel and four other alleged associates, and sent all seven to judicial remand.
