Parliament to Discuss Police Action Against Students

The government has agreed to a detailed discussion in Parliament on students’ issues and the alleged police lathi charge and use of force during the July 20 ‘Chalo Parliament’ protest. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to make a statement in the House on the matter. The government has urged opposition parties to avoid disruptions during the discussion and listen to the Home Minister’s response peacefully to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament.

The protest was organised in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the NEET paper leak issue, with students demanding accountability from the government. The July 20 ‘Chalo Parliament’ programme reportedly escalated after police used lathi charges, tear gas and pellet guns against protesters. Opposition parties had been demanding a statement from Amit Shah, leading to repeated disruptions in both Houses for nearly three weeks. With the government now agreeing to a discussion, the prolonged parliamentary deadlock is expected to ease.
