Senior Citizens Targeted by Cyber Fraudsters: Hyderabad CP Sajjanar Warns of Rising Online Scams

Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Sajjanar has warned senior citizens to remain highly vigilant as cybercriminals increasingly target them through sophisticated online scams. According to police data, 403 cybercrime cases involving senior citizens were registered between January 2025 and July 31, 2026, with total losses estimated at ₹102.02 crore. Trading fraud emerged as the biggest category, with 113 cases resulting in losses of ₹55.88 crore. Fraudsters are also using WhatsApp and Telegram to lure victims with fake part-time jobs, investment opportunities and promises of high returns.

Digital arrest scams have also emerged as a major threat, with 69 cases involving losses of ₹31.93 crore. Fraudsters reportedly pose as police, CBI, ED or customs officials and threaten victims with arrest during video calls. In addition, 115 OTP fraud cases caused losses of ₹4.94 crore, while 22 investment fraud cases resulted in losses of ₹2.79 crore. Dating scams and honey traps accounted for seven cases, with victims losing more than ₹70.11 lakh. Sajjanar said cybercriminals often exploit loneliness through social media and dating apps, using fake gifts, customs charges and emergency expenses to extort money. Police have intensified awareness campaigns and are freezing bank accounts immediately after receiving complaints to facilitate fund recovery. He also urged family members to keep an eye on senior citizens’ phone usage and banking transactions.
