APCC chief Y.S. Sharmila strongly condemned the detention of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and INDIA bloc MPs during their protest over alleged irregularities in voter deletions and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. She questioned whether peacefully raising concerns over electoral issues could be treated as a crime and alleged that the Centre was attempting to suppress the Opposition’s voice. She also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and said the Congress would continue its agitation until its demands were addressed.
TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud also condemned the detention of Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders. Speaking to the media in Delhi, he said stopping opposition leaders from holding a peaceful protest before the Election Commission was against democratic principles. Goud alleged that the government’s response to the INDIA bloc’s protest was undemocratic and called on democratic forces to condemn the action.
