SIT Probe Into Student Protest Violence

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an independent inquiry into allegations of violence during recent student protests. The Court also ordered authorities to immediately release students who were arrested or detained during the protests, provided they have no criminal background or involvement in any other criminal cases.

The Bench highlighted that the right to peaceful protest is protected under the Constitution and stated that allegations of excessive force by law enforcement agencies must be investigated independently. The SIT will examine the circumstances surrounding the violence, including the actions of both protesters and authorities, and submit its findings according to the law. The matter continues to remain under the consideration of the Supreme Court.
