Special Gram Sabhas were conducted across all Gram Panchayats in Telangana on Friday, October 2, to mark Gandhi Jayanti and strengthen public participation in village development. The meetings focused on identifying local needs, mapping available resources and preparing comprehensive Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs). Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj, the Gram Sabhas were conducted in a festive atmosphere, with colourful rangoli designs used to create village maps showing roads, drinking water sources, schools, Anganwadi centres, sanitation facilities, irrigation resources and other infrastructure.
Villagers discussed priorities including drinking water, sanitation, roads, drainage, rainwater harvesting, employment, livelihoods, agriculture and strengthening women’s self-help groups. MLAs, senior and district officials, public representatives, Panchayat secretaries and officials from various departments participated and collected suggestions from residents. Minister for Panchayat Raj and Women and Child Welfare Danasari Anasuya Seethakka directed officials to ensure that the resolutions and suggestions adopted at the Gram Sabhas are not confined to paper. She called for their systematic incorporation into GPDPs, effective coordination of government schemes and available funds, and transparent implementation with accountability to the public.
