Supreme Clarification on NEET Protest Cases

The Supreme Court clarified that its objection was only regarding the release of students with a history of serious crimes in cases related to NEET paper leak protests. The court said state governments can close cases or withdraw FIRs against others as per law. The clarification came after the Centre informed the bench that it was not taking a strict stand on FIRs registered during the protests.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the government does not intend to withdraw cases involving around 2,700 individuals accused of heinous offences. Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked that police officers who used excessive force should not get unnecessary protection, while hardened criminals should not seek shelter under the identity of students. The next hearing is scheduled for August 18.
