The Donald Trump administration has announced a major change affecting immigrants working in the United States. It has ended the automatic extension of work permits that previously allowed eligible immigrants to continue working while their renewal applications were pending, even after their existing permits expired. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the new rule on Tuesday. The decision could affect immigrants who rely on automatic extensions to maintain their employment while waiting for their work permit renewals.
Previously, eligible immigrants who filed their renewal applications on time could continue working for up to 540 days after their existing work permits expired. The provision was introduced during former President Joe Biden’s administration. However, the Trump administration imposed temporary restrictions on the policy last year. It has now introduced a new rule ending the automatic extension. As a result, immigrants whose renewal applications are delayed may face difficulties continuing their jobs after their current work authorisation expires.
