Tensions are high in the Strait of Hormuz. Two Singapore-registered container ships passing through the strait have been attacked by unidentified projectiles. One of the ships was completely burnt and sank in the sea, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore confirmed on Wednesday.
The ship, the GFS Pride, caught fire and sank after being attacked, but its 21 crew members were rescued, the MPA said. The other ship, the GFS Giselle, was slightly damaged but managed to reach safety on its own, with its 22 crew members unharmed, it said. Officials have clarified that there are no Singapore citizens on board either ship.
However, Iran is telling a different story about the incident. According to the details disclosed by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, a ship that entered its waters illegally and dangerously hit a naval mine and exploded. Iran said that the ship, which was carrying more than 2,500 containers, caught fire and sank. It warned that other ships were at risk due to the containers floating in the sea and that nearby boats should be alert.IRGC Navy Commander Ali Azmai said that his navy was constantly monitoring the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that strict measures would be taken if anyone violated the rules at the instigation of the United States.
