Why Is RRR North Stuck?

The Regional Ring Road (RRR) is being projected by both the Centre and Telangana governments as a game-changer for the state, but the project continues to move at a slow pace. The 161-km northern section, sanctioned in 2018, is still stuck in the land acquisition stage. Tenders were invited in November 2024 but were later put on hold due to technical reasons. The PPP Appraisal Committee subsequently fixed the project cost at ₹23,935.6 crore, but months after the approval, there has been little visible progress.

Land acquisition and compensation issues continue to delay the project. In contrast, the 162 km Khammam–Devarapalli Greenfield Highway, which was sanctioned around the same time, has already been completed and opened to traffic. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Roads & Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy have repeatedly urged the Centre to speed up construction, at least in areas where land acquisition is completed. However, the RRR North project remains largely stalled.
