SS Rajamouli’s upcoming epic Varanasi is among the most anticipated Indian film projects, with audiences keen to see its scale, storytelling and visual presentation. The film has attracted additional attention because it reportedly includes a sequence inspired by the Ramayana. Although the episode is expected to occupy only a limited portion of the overall narrative, expectations surrounding its presentation have continued to grow. The project is being discussed alongside the Hindi film Ramayana, as both draw on the cultural and mythological significance of the ancient Indian epic.
According to reports about Rajamouli’s podcast interview with Empire magazine, the director expressed dissatisfaction with earlier cinematic adaptations of the Ramayana, suggesting that they had not fully captured the epic’s grandeur. He reportedly indicated that Varanasi would offer a more expansive and visually impressive presentation of the Ramayana-related sequence. These reported comments have sparked curiosity about how the director will bring the episode to the screen. MM Keeravani is composing the music for Varanasi, and the film is reportedly targeting a worldwide theatrical release on April 7 next year. Further details about the sequence and the production schedule are awaited.
