Fatty liver disease is no longer limited to people who consume alcohol. Along with alcoholic fatty liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now affecting millions due to obesity, diabetes, unhealthy diets, and lack of physical activity. Since the disease often progresses silently, many people remain unaware until visible changes appear on the face and skin. Puffiness around the eyes, dull-looking skin, dark patches on the neck or face, persistent itching, and yellowing of the eyes or skin in advanced stages are among the warning signs linked to liver damage.
These symptoms alone cannot confirm fatty liver, but they should never be ignored if they are accompanied by fatigue, discomfort in the upper-right abdomen, poor appetite, nausea, unexplained weight gain, dark urine, pale stools, or abnormal liver function test results. Eating a fibre-rich diet, avoiding sugary and processed foods, exercising for at least 150 minutes every week, maintaining a healthy weight, and undergoing regular liver health check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of severe liver disease.
