Ear and nose piercing has been a long standing tradition in India, but parents often wonder about the right age and safety precautions. Doctors say age alone is not the only factor, proper hygiene and safe piercing practices are crucial. For ear piercing, some families choose to do it within the first six months, but experts generally suggest waiting until around one year, as very young babies may have a higher risk of infection and cannot care for the piercing themselves.
Regardless of age, piercing should be done by a trained professional using properly sterilised equipment. Doctors advise using a sterile needle rather than a piercing gun to reduce the risk of infection and scarring. After piercing, the area should be kept clean, and parents or children should avoid touching it with unwashed hands. Redness, swelling, increasing pain or pus may indicate an infection and should be evaluated by a doctor.
Nose piercing requires additional care because a child’s nose is sensitive and younger children frequently touch their face, potentially increasing the risk of infection. Experts recommend waiting until children are old enough to understand and maintain proper hygiene. For children, the early teenage years, around 12 to 15 years, may be more suitable for nose piercing, provided it is performed safely by a trained professional.
