Celebrating 25 years since its release, Lagaan remains one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema history. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starring Aamir Khan, the film not only won critical acclaim but also earned an Academy Award nomination, bringing global recognition to Indian storytelling. According to Satyajit Bhatkal’s book The Spirit of Lagaan, the film’s journey began in July 1996 when Gowariker first narrated the story to Aamir Khan.
Interestingly, Aamir initially rejected the script, believing that audiences would not connect with the period sports drama. However, Gowariker remained determined and reworked the screenplay with his team before presenting it again. The revised version deeply moved Aamir, who reportedly became emotional after hearing it. Despite facing difficulties in finding a producer, the project eventually gained momentum when Aamir agreed to both produce and star in the film, paving the way for one of Indian cinema’s greatest success stories.
