From Behind the Camera to the Spotlight: South India’s Directors Who Turned Heroes

South Indian cinema has been witnessing an interesting trend in recent years, with filmmakers moving from behind the camera to the spotlight. Directors such as Lokesh Kanagaraj, Pradeep Ranganathan, S.J. Suryah, Sundar C, Cheran and Tharun Bhascker have explored acting alongside filmmaking. Lokesh, known for films such as Maanagaram, Kaithi, Vikram, Leo and Coolie, has recently stepped into the lead-actor space. Pradeep Ranganathan, who made his directorial debut with Comali, became a popular actor with Love Today and later Dragon. S.J. Suryah successfully combined direction and acting, while Sundar C and Cheran also established themselves as actors after successful directorial careers. Telugu filmmaker Tharun Bhascker similarly impressed audiences with his performances in Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, Meeku Maathrame Cheptha and Keedaa Cola.

The trend also works in the opposite direction, with several popular actors taking up filmmaking. Arjun Sarja made his directorial mark with Sevagan, while Prabhu Deva successfully moved into direction after establishing himself as a dancer and actor. Raghava Lawrence turned director with Mass and later achieved success with the Kanchana franchise as actor, writer and filmmaker. Kamal Haasan directed and starred in films including Hey Ram and Vishwaroopam. In Telugu cinema, Vishwak Sen directed Falaknuma Das and Das Ka Dhamki, while Srinivas Avasarala made his directorial debut with Oohalu Gusagusalade and later helmed Jyo Achyutananda and Phalana Abbayi Phalana Ammayi. Their journeys show how artists are increasingly expanding their creative roles beyond acting or directing.
